Michelle Obama Celebrates National Summer Learning Day on June 20
Four years ago we launched the Summer Matters campaign with the Partnership for Children & Youth to move summer learning from the side lines of education advocacy to center stage here in California. We are thrilled that this year National Summer Learning Day will be headlined by First Lady Michelle Obama. In California, PR & Company will be promoting dozens of events throughout the summer to reinforce the critical importance high quality summer learning plays in the academic and social and emotional health of all children. Those events will feature LA’s Best and San Francisco’s Mo’ Magic and draw thousands of kids, as well as State Senator Mark Leno, LA Superintendent John Deasey, and other state and local leaders.
Sheri Sobrato’s Digging Deep Helps Kids and Families in Need
PR & Company had the honor of helping to launch a project of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation by Sheri Sobrato, philanthropist, brain tumor survivor and Trustee of the Sobrato Family Foundation. Digging Deep is a visually stunning book that helps seriously ill children and youth discover and harness their strength, power and courage through journaling. Sobrato’s mission is to ensure that every child in need get a copy of Digging Deep and at the same time encourage more focus on the inner emotional needs of families struggling through serious illness.
From Saving Kindergarten to Expanding Early Learning
Two years ago, PR & Company launched the “Save Kindergarten” campaign with Early Edge and as of this writing, we’re working with a wide coalition of groups to urge Governor Brown to sign into law legislation that will expand early learning opportunities for all low income families.
It’s All About Talent & Commitment
Our bench strength for kids grew recently with Christine Guardia joining PR & Company after helping to launch The Children’s Movement of California, an advocacy initiative at Children Now as a FuseCorps fellow. Janis Dela Torre demonstrated her commitment to juvenile justice and child welfare through her work with The California Wellness Foundation’s California Peace Prize. Rounding out our team include talented interns, Jacqueline Gleason, graduate student in the Public Policy program at Mills College, Jennifer Kim, a rising senior at Macalester College studying Educational Studies and Psychology and Katherine O’Brien, a senior majoring in International Affairs and Political Science at Northeastern University.Powering Forward for Children & Youth
